What is the nature of sound?  What governs its enigmatic structures, behaviors and boundaries? How do we construct, perceive and realize sound?   The four works in this exhibition take up a modest physical space but they permeate and occupy the sonic space of the gallery.

Sound is the backdrop to our lives. We remember images; how do we remember sound? Until sound exceeds or dips below a threshold that is considered normal or bearable, we often ignore or marginalize it. We hear but we don’t listen. Sound ebbs and flows around us, uplifting, irritating, strange and common. It reaches us through solids, liquids, gas, nerves and organs: makes its way to us through and around objects. It has no substance or mass; it is process.

New Media Gallery invites you to experience four works by four multi-talented artists. They show and perform around the world . They have allowed sound to inform their lives and artistic practice..and in the process they will alter your own perception of sound.

Carsten Nicolai (Germany),  Tristan Perich (USA),  Jesper Norda (Sweden),  Adam Basanta (Canada)

Artist Talk – Adam Basanta – January 21, 7:00 – 8:00pm

New Media Gallery is proud to present the tenth in our NMG Artist Talk Series.  Adam Basanta is a multi-talented, award-winning Montreal-based sound artist, composer, and performer of experimental music. His work includes sound installations, experimental electronic + chamber music composition, site-specific interventions, and laptop performance. He works across disciplines and media, looking at the intersections between conceptual and sensorial dimensions of listening, the materiality of technological apparatus, and the instabilities of instrumentality.  His audiovisual installations and experimental concert music have been presented worldwide.  Adam’s work appears in the NMG exhibition OTIC: Systems of Sound.
