Janice Bannister – Event MC

Janice Bannister is an active comedy presenter with series in the theatre at Anvil Centre and at Lafflines on Columbia Street. She has taught comedy techniques at Douglas College, Capilano University’s Continuing Studies, and for the City of New Westminster. She now teaches her own comedy courses through her Laughter Zone 101.  Her standup performances and teaching have been featured in the Vancouver Sun, CBC, and on the W Network.

The Vancouver Cello Quartet will open the day with selections such as:

If you have never been to a Royal City Musical Theatre production, you will finally see what the fuss is about with this chance to experience Musical theatre favourites performed by world class talents.


12:15 pm       Ostwelve

Ronnie Dean Harris assumed the name “Ostwelve” in his early teenage years as a pseudonym for grafitti culture and then continued to use the name as an MC name during his hiphop career spanning 16 years professionally.


1:15 pm         City of New Westminster Poet Laureate, Alan Hill

We are delighted to have Mr. Hill share some selected poems inspired our City.  Poet Alan Hill was chosen in February 2017 as New Westminster’s fourth Poet Laureate. Mr. Hill is a resident of the Glenbrook North neighbourhood of New Westminster. He is co-manager of the Poetry New West reading series and has been a regular on the Vancouver reading circuit for over ten years.  Read more about his work and the City’s Poet Laureate program here.

Film Screening of A Tribe of One     Room 417

Hosted by Chief Rhonda Larrabee of the Qayqayt First Nation, this film follows Rhonda Larrabee who discovered she was of First Nations descent.  Rhonda’s journey led eventually to the dramatic resolution of her own identity: obtaining her Indian Status Card and re-establishing the New Westminster Band.  Today, as proud Chief of the Band, she is focused on revitalizing the Qayqayt First Nation.
