Fractures is a multidisciplinary exhibition from five Latin American artists exploring the moments in their lives when their being was fractured, and their lives redirected. Using a variety of mediums like printmaking, gouache, ink, oil painting, acrylic, photography, and collage, each artist examines her individual relationship with social issues they’ve willingly or unwillingly broken away from.
Some of these fractures are from the constraints of gender or sexuality norms imposed on women, or from old spiritual belief systems. Others reflect the fatigue and uncertainty of forced migration, or embrace the re-discovery of identity by revisiting one’s roots.
One artist may display on layers of silk fabric the home that was left behind, as if the translucid material contains the fleeting fragments of her past. Another embraces bright colors, highlighting the connection with her ethnicity and values. A third uses gouache with black ink to contrast the before and after of the break, hinting at what she either shed or lost as a result. Others use engraving and collage to reflect the ruptures and the internal layers of transitions, one moment superimposed over the other, building the strength to confront stereotypes and deviate from social establishments.
The intention of this exhibition is to portray the compelling stories of the artists in their process of rediscovery after an internal fracture. Their lives are not the same after than they were before, and the process of healing is gradual. Yet, after every painful experience, each artist has recreated herself at the crossroads of new realities, new land, or a new identity.
