Echoes of the Heartland

Presented by the Vancouver Chamber Music Society in collaboration with Anvil Theatre

In their highly anticipated VCMS debut, the Vancouver String Quartet—a powerhouse ensemble formed by principal players of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra—brings together two striking chamber works that traverse tradition, emotion, and national voice.

Dohnányi’s Serenade in C major opens the program with charm, invention, and surprising depth. Written at the turn of the 20th century, this quintessence of Hungarian romanticism fuses classical form with modern color. From its noble opening march to its vibrant rondo conclusion, the piece reflects a deep musical lineage—Brahmsian rigor filtered through Dohnányi’s uniquely personal voice.

In contrast, Tchaikovsky’s String Quartet No. 1 in D major, Op. 11, reveals the composer’s gentler side. Structured with classical poise yet full of heartfelt lyricism, the quartet includes the beloved Andante cantabile, famously known for moving Tolstoy to tears. With folk melody, rhythmic bite, and expressive elegance, the work speaks in a language both simple and sublime.

Together, these works form a dialogue between Central European refinement and Slavic soul—performed by a new ensemble of the symphony’s leaders: Nicholas Wright, David Lakirovich, Hung-Wei Huang, and Henry Shapard. A program of contrast and kinship, full of depth, grace, and musical conversation.

Program:

• Serenade in C major, Op. 10– Ernő Dohnányi
• String Quartet No. 1 in D major, Op. 11– Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
