Sarkissian, Yoon and Pfau: Whispers and Sparks

Presented by the Vancouver Chamber Music Society in collaboration with Anvil Theatre

Chamber music often thrives in contrasts—between intimacy and exuberance, poetry and virtuosity, whispers and sparks. In this compelling collaboration, flutist Arin Sarkissian, cellist Brian Yoon, and pianist Monica Pfau bring together three distinctive works that span the early Romantic era to the jazz-infused language of the twenty-first century. Robert Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70 opens the afternoon with music of tenderness and impassioned expression. A cornerstone of the flute repertoire, Carl Maria von Weber’s Trio in G minor, Op. 63 is one of the earliest masterpieces written for the unusual combination of flute, cello, and piano, marrying Classical elegance with the expressive freedom of early Romanticism.

The program culminates in Nikolai Kapustin’s Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano, a work infused with jazz rhythms, brilliant virtuosity, and infectious energy. Blurring the boundaries between classical tradition and improvisatory spirit, Kapustin’s music brings the concert to an exhilarating and sparkling close.

Arin Sarkissian, Principal Flutist of the Victoria Symphony and recipient of the 2024 Michael Measures First Prize, joins Victoria Symphony Principal Cello Brian Yoon and acclaimed pianist Monica Pfau for this vibrant musical conversation. A program of contrasts and connections, Whispers and Sparks invites listeners into a world of quiet poetry, vivid colour, and electrifying imagination.

Program:
• Robert Schumann: Adagio and Allegro, Op.70
• Carl Maria von Weber: Trio in G minor, Op.63
• Nikolai Kapustin: Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano
