Academy Chamber Players: Notes from Italia
Presented by the Vancouver Chamber Music Society in collaboration with Anvil Theatre
Few places have inspired composers quite like Italy. With its luminous landscapes, vibrant cities, and rich musical heritage, the country has long stirred the imagination of musicians from across Europe. In Notes from Italia, the Academy Chamber Players celebrate Italy not only as a birthplace of great music, but also as a lasting source of inspiration and memory.
The program begins with Luigi Boccherini’s String Quintet in E major, music of elegance, warmth, and unmistakable Italian charm. Puccini’s Crisantemi, written in a single night as a tribute to the memory of a dear friend, offers a striking contrast—its deeply lyrical lines revealing the composer’s gift for drama and poignant expression
The afternoon culminates in Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence, one of the great masterpieces of the chamber repertoire. Though composed by a Russian master, the work was inspired by memories of Florence and radiates with Mediterranean warmth, soaring melodies, and exuberant energy. Richly textured and emotionally expansive, it stands as a testament to the enduring allure of Italy and its power to inspire artists far beyond its borders.
Comprised of exceptional faculty from the Vancouver Academy of Music, the Academy Chamber Players bring together some of the city’s finest performers in a flexible ensemble that honours both artistry and education. A program of beauty, nostalgia, and passion, Notes from Italia invites listeners on a musical journey through the landscapes and memories of Italy.
